101

Echo Park, CA

Located in Echo Park, right next to the 101 freeway, the site zoning allows the development of 40 apartment buildings with the maximum height of 4 stories.

The site has an unique combination of features: on the north side the view Echo PArk lake, directly adjacent across the street, on the south a breathtaking view of Los Angeles downtown and Hollywood separated by the freeway located just few feet away.

The design intent is to create living units with both and south views; a challenging task due to site restrictions.

Inspired by the famous Unite' d'Habitation by le Corbusier, 101  moves up one notch as far as space planning and unit distribution: the result is 20 one bed units on two stories, 10 two bedroom units on two stories, and 10 three bedroom units on three stories. All the units will benefit from north and south views, and consequently from direct and indirect sun lighting.

The solution is found by interlocking two one bed, one two bed and one three bed units within a modulus of 4 stories high and the width of a typical two or three stories unit. The modulus would repeat 10 times along the length of the building.
